What happened to the waiter in the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas?

The waiter's name in is Pavel and he is Jewish.  Bruno's father uses Pavel in their home as a servant.  Bruno has discovered from his sister, Gretel, that Pavel was a physician before being captured by the Nazis.  Towards the end of Chapter 13, something unfortunate happens to the former doctor, who Bruno feels may be sick.  On the evening when Bruno's father is hosting a high ranking soldier (Lieutenant Kotler) from the camp for dinner, Pavel has been called to service as a waiter for the family.  As he is opening a bottle of wine, he accidentally spills it on the lieutenant.  This agitates Kotler who reacts very sharply and violently.  The specific details of the exchange are deliberately omitted by the author, but it was likely a horrific beating at the least.  It is mentioned that a maid is charged with cleaning up a bloody mess afterward. The family does nothing to stop the attack.  Bruno goes to bed very upset about what happened to Pavel.  What is certain from the book is the fact that Pavel never worked in the home again.
