When Giles Corey shows up at John and Elizabeth Proctors' house in Act Two, he comes to tell them that his wife and Francis Nurse's wife, Rebecca, have been arrested on charges of witchcraft. This is incredibly shocking news because the Proctors are somewhat removed from town and they aren't as in the loop as others who live nearer by; they do not realize how powerful the court -- and the girls -- have become....

This is incredibly shocking news because the Proctors are somewhat removed from town and they aren't as in the loop as others who live nearer by; they do not realize how powerful the court -- and the girls -- have become. Hale is also completely shocked because, as he'd said earlier in the act, "God forbid such a one [as Rebecca] be charged." Further, when he'd left the court earlier in the day, Rebecca had only been mentioned but not charged. The fact that not only she is now charged, but also Martha Corey -- Giles's wife -- is therefore a complete surprise to Hale.
