He frightens Pip into bringing him food, drink, and a file. From that moment, he begins to control Pip’s life. After Magwitch’s exile to Australia and his financial success there, he decides to become Pip’s benefactor, though in secret. Pip thinks little about him, believing that it is Miss Havisham to whom he should be grateful. When Magwitch returns and reveals himself, Pip immediately decides to reject him as his benefactor. However, he cannot dismiss him totally, especially once he learns of Magwitch’s history and connection to Estella. In turn, Pip becomes Magwitch’s benefactor, sheltering him and hiding him from the authorities (and also from the other convict, Compeyson). In the end, Pip endeavors to aid Magwitch in his escape from England, which ends in Magwitch’s arrest and death in prison. The roles have reversed, now that Pip has had an opportunity to show his gratitude to Magwitch, becoming a substitute son.
