When a government fails to protect the rights of its citizens, the writers of the Declaration of Independence believed that the people must change their government. Because the British government no longer protected the colonists' rights, and in some cases took away those rights, the colonists believed they needed to overthrow the British government and start a new one of their own that would protect their rights. Sometimes these rights are also referred to as our civil rights. It is important to know about your rights and the responsibilities that come with exercising these rights.
