As was mentioned in the previous answer, Brian does not have any formal training flying a bush plane. However, the pilot does give Brian a chance to steer the plane for a little while. Brian turns the wheel to the right, then back to the left to steady the plane. After the pilot has a heart attack, Brian is forced to fly the plane by himself. As Brian looks at the numerous gauges and dials, he recalls reading about an altimeter but does not remember its purpose. He also understands that airspeed is different from groundspeed, but this knowledge does not help his cause. Brian also remembers certain parts from different books he's read about flying. He is familiar with how wings work, as well as the function of a propeller. Brian is also familiar with how pulling the throttle can make the plane move up or down from watching the pilot steer. Fortunately, Brian is able to steer the plane into the edge of a lake and survives the crash.
