The revenues are also used to fund the various programs for which the federal government is responsible. The government is responsible for building and maintaining roads. The government must have a military and develop and build weapons for the military. The government has expenses in the area of education. The government has created various social programs like Head Start, Medicare, and Medicaid. Social Security is another social program of the government.  Tax revenues are used to help fund these programs.

The Antifederalists didn’t want to have a large federal government. They understood that if taxes were low, the size of the government would be smaller. There would be fewer federal programs. The Federalists, on the other hand, wanted to have a larger federal government with more workers playing a role in running more programs. Today, those who support lower taxes want to have fewer federal programs and a smaller role of the federal government in our lives.
