She knows that her father will take a plane to Mexico for the funeral, and he will return with a black-and-white photograph of the family before the tomb. He has told Esperanza first because she is the oldest; now, it will be her duty to inform her siblings. She must also explain to the younger ones that they must not play any games that cause them to make noise; instead, out of respect for their father's grief, they must be quiet.

Turning to look closely at her father, Esperanza reflects upon this man upon her bed:

My Papa,...who wakes up tired in the dark, who combs his hair with water, drinks his coffee, and is gone before we wake, today is sitting on my bed.
